CBD Oil vs. Tincture: What’s the Difference?

As cannabidiol (CBD) becomes more popular across the country, you’ll undoubtedly hear quite a bit about CBD oils and tinctures. While they’re both liquids and may be packaged similarly, it’s important to note that there are quite a few differences when it comes to CBD oil vs. tincture.

This post will cover what you need to know about the two CBD products.

What’s CBD?

Before we get too deep into things, we’ll start by giving an overview of CBD as a whole. CBD is a compound in the cannabis plant, but unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it doesn’t get the user high.

There isn’t a ton of official CBD research, but it’s used by many folks for pain relief and to treat anxiety, depression, acne and even some types of seizures.

What’s CBD oil?

CBD oil is a liquid that’s typically a blend of CBD extract, a carrier oil like medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) coconut oil and other compounds extracted from plant material like terpenes and flavonoids. Once all of the oils and compounds are extracted, they’re mixed together and bottled for user consumption.

What’s a CBD tincture?

CBD tinctures are also liquids, but they’re made by extracting CBD compounds with high-proof alcohol. To create a tincture, professionals essentially place CBD in a container of alcohol and let it sit for a few weeks or even months. Tinctures are incredibly bitter, so sweeteners or flavorings are often added to mask the original taste.

How do you take oils and tinctures?

Another one of the differences when it comes to CBD oil vs. tincture is how they’re taken. A tincture should be applied right under your tongue to feel the greatest effects in the shortest amount of time. While CBD oils can also be taken orally, note that it can take a few hours for them to kick in.

Once you ingest a tincture or oil, you’ll feel the intended effects of the product through your body for a few hours, but, as noted above, CBD users will not feel high.

One benefit of oils is that they can also be taken topically. Applying an oil directly to your skin provides on-the-spot relief instead of feeling it through your entire body.

How can I find a quality oil or tincture?

It’s important to note that not all oils and tinctures are created equal, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate CBD products. To be as safe as possible, always buy your CBD from a reputable manufacturer. A few things to check on the package include the product’s potency and all other ingredients

The CBD potency should be clearly visible on the packaging. If it’s not, we don’t recommend purchasing the product. Similarly, the manufacturer should list the other ingredients in the oil or tincture. Some manufacturers include THC.
